Heritage Railway Station Restoration
Central, Sydney
Federation public landmark
8 weeks
Complete restoration of the entrance doors, decorative fretwork, and ornamental timber brackets on a landmark Sydney railway station, carried out to heritage conservation standards.
Scope: Entrance doors, decorative fretwork and ornamental brackets
The challenge
- Decades of weather and heavy public use had left the timber entrance doors worn, with decay concentrated at the lower rails and thresholds.
- Sections of decorative fretwork and ornamental brackets were damaged or missing, breaking up the building's intricate decorative scheme.
- Previous maintenance had built up layers of paint that obscured fine detail and trapped moisture against the timber.
Our approach
- 1We assessed and documented each element, identifying sound original timber to retain and the decayed sections to splice.
- 2Entrance doors were repaired with Dutchman splices in matched timber, re-hung, and eased to a clean, even close.
- 3Surviving fretwork and brackets were conserved, and missing detail was replicated to match the original pattern and profile.
- 4All elements were prepared, primed, and finished in a heritage-appropriate system before reinstatement.
Materials and techniques
- Species-matched timber for splice and replication work
- Traditional joinery and hand-finishing techniques
- Heritage-appropriate paint and protective finishes
