Heritage Timber Restoration
Architectural Woodwork in Sydney
The decorative timber on a heritage building, the fretwork, corbels, brackets, finials, and mouldings, is what lifts it from ordinary to memorable. Noble Heritage restores architectural woodwork across Sydney on both residential and public landmark projects, conserving original detail and recreating what has been lost. This is fine, hand-finished work where proportion and detail matter, and it is some of what we do best.

Signs you may need this work
Common problems we resolve
- Damaged or deteriorated ornamental timber detail
- Missing fretwork, corbels, brackets, or finials
- Decorative mouldings and trims worn or painted over
- Landmark or public building joinery needing conservation
- Past repairs that don't match the original detail
Conserving fine decorative detail
Decorative timber is often the most intricate, and most vulnerable, work on a building. Our approach is to conserve as much original detail as possible, carefully repairing and consolidating ornamental elements rather than stripping and replacing them. Where carving or fretwork has been lost, we replicate it to match the surviving pattern.
We have carried out architectural woodwork on public landmarks as well as private homes, from entrance joinery and fretwork gables to ornamental brackets, and we bring the same precision to every scale of project.
Hand-finished and made to match
Mass production can't reproduce the subtlety of original decorative timber, so much of this work is done by hand. We match profiles, species, and detail, and finish each piece so it integrates seamlessly with the original scheme.
Whether the work is a single ornamental element or an entire decorative façade, the goal is consistency, restored and replicated detail that reads as a single, coherent design.

How we work
Our restoration process
On-site assessment
We inspect every element, document its condition, and identify what can be saved versus what needs replication, then provide a clear written scope and quote.
Conservation plan
We agree an approach that satisfies heritage guidelines and, where required, liaise with your council, architect, or heritage consultant before work begins.
Workshop and on-site repair
Skilled tradespeople carry out the work using traditional techniques and premium, species-matched timber, in our workshop or on site to suit the job.
Finishing and handover
We apply heritage-appropriate finishes, reinstall hardware, and walk you through the completed work so it performs and looks the part for decades.
Questions answered
Architectural woodwork: common questions
Do you work on public and commercial heritage buildings?
Yes. Alongside residential work, we restore architectural woodwork on public landmarks and commercial heritage buildings, including entrance joinery, fretwork, and ornamental detail.
Can lost decorative timber be recreated?
Yes. We replicate missing fretwork, corbels, brackets, and mouldings to match the surviving pattern, hand-finishing each piece to integrate with the original scheme.
How is architectural woodwork different from general joinery?
It is finer, more decorative work where proportion and detail are critical. It demands conservation skill and hand finishing rather than off-the-shelf components.
