Heritage Timber Restoration
Timber Rot Repair in Sydney
Rot doesn't mean the timber is finished. Using traditional Dutchman and splice repairs, Noble Heritage cuts out only the decayed section of a window, door, sill, or frame and lets in matched timber, so the original element is saved and the repair disappears once finished. We carry out timber rot repair across Sydney on everything from a single rotten sill to extensive façade joinery.

Signs you may need this work
Common problems we resolve
- Soft, dark, or crumbling timber you can push a screwdriver into
- Decay at sills, lower rails, and the base of door frames
- Bubbling or flaking paint hiding moisture damage beneath
- Filler repairs that keep cracking and falling out
- Fungal staining, musty smell, or persistent damp around joinery
Dutchman and splice repairs
A Dutchman repair replaces only the decayed portion of a timber element with a precisely cut piece of matched timber, joined and shaped to blend seamlessly with the original. Done well, it is invisible once primed and painted, and far stronger and more durable than a filler patch. This is the heart of conservation timber repair, and it lets us save elements others would condemn.
For timber that is weakened but largely intact, we use consolidation to stabilise the existing fibres before making good. We always match timber species and grain direction so the repair behaves the same as the surrounding material through seasonal movement.
Fixing the cause, not just the symptom
Rot is a moisture problem. As part of the repair we look at why the timber failed, failed paint, poor drainage, blocked weep holes, or missing flashings, and address it so the new work lasts. There is little point repairing a sill that will simply rot again.
Repairs are then primed, made good, and finished with a heritage-appropriate paint system that seals end grain and joints, the most vulnerable points, against future water ingress.

How we work
Our restoration process
On-site assessment
We inspect every element, document its condition, and identify what can be saved versus what needs replication, then provide a clear written scope and quote.
Conservation plan
We agree an approach that satisfies heritage guidelines and, where required, liaise with your council, architect, or heritage consultant before work begins.
Workshop and on-site repair
Skilled tradespeople carry out the work using traditional techniques and premium, species-matched timber, in our workshop or on site to suit the job.
Finishing and handover
We apply heritage-appropriate finishes, reinstall hardware, and walk you through the completed work so it performs and looks the part for decades.
Questions answered
Timber rot repair: common questions
Is rotten timber always beyond repair?
No. In most cases only part of the element is affected. We splice in matched timber to replace the decayed section and save the original, which is stronger and more authentic than replacing the whole piece.
What is a Dutchman repair?
A Dutchman is a traditional conservation repair where only the decayed portion of timber is cut out and replaced with a precisely matched insert. Once finished it is invisible and far more durable than filler.
Will the rot come back?
Not if the cause is fixed. We diagnose the source of moisture, correct it, and seal the repair with an appropriate finish so the timber stays protected.
